THEY SHOT THE PIANO PLAYER TO OPEN THE 45TH CINEMED

For the first time, an animated film will be presented at the opening of Cinemed on Friday October 20 at the Berlioz Opera!

They Shot the Piano Player by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal is a colorful, musical, historical, exciting film, co-signed by one of the most important Spanish directors, which takes us to Latin America. And yet the film is linked to our territory: it was in fact co-produced by Films d’Ici Méditerranée, supported by the Occitanie Region and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole.

A New York music journalist investigates the disappearance, in 1976, on the eve of the coup d’état in Argentina, of Francisco Tenório Jr, a virtuoso Brazilian pianist on tour in Buenos Aires. While celebrating jazz and bossa nova, the film captures a fleeting period of creative freedom at a turning point in South American history in the 1960s and 1970s, just before the continent was engulfed by totalitarian regimes.

Former film journalist, Fernando Trueba has a long career as a filmmaker since They Shot the Piano Player is his 19th feature film and his second in animation after Chico & Rita (2010). He won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1994 with Belle Epoque .
An artist, artistic director, graphic designer, illustrator and comic book author, Javier Mariscal is a long-time partner of Fernando Trueba with whom he shares a keen interest in music, already very present in Chico & Rita .

They will both be in Montpellier to present their film as a preview of its release on January 24, 2024 by Dulac Distribution .
A meeting with the directors will take place on Saturday October 21 at Corum and will be hosted by Julie Savary from ARTE Cinéma.
