Spotify Finally Launches HD Lossless Audio for Premium Subscribers

After nearly five years of anticipation and several missed deadlines, Spotify has finally flipped the switch on high-definition lossless audio. The streaming giant officially began the global rollout of its “Lossless” feature this week, fulfilling a long-standing promise to its 240 million Premium subscribers.

The feature, which was first teased as “Spotify HiFi” back in 2021, is being integrated directly into the standard Premium subscription at no additional cost—a strategic move to remain competitive with rivals like Apple Music and Amazon Music, who have offered high-fidelity tiers for years.

The Sound of Silence… and Clarity

The new audio tier provides CD-quality streaming at 16-bit/44.1kHz and extends up to 24-bit/44.1kHz for select tracks using the FLAC format. While some audiophile platforms offer even higher sample rates, Spotify’s implementation focuses on balancing “bit-perfect” clarity with the seamless streaming performance the app is known for.

“The wait is officially over,” a Spotify representative stated during the launch event. “We have taken the time to build a lossless experience that doesn’t just sound better, but works effortlessly across every device in the Spotify ecosystem.”

Key Features of the Update:

• Automatic Quality Adjustment: The app will intelligently switch to Lossless when on a stable Wi-Fi connection, while reverting to “Very High” on cellular data to prevent excessive data usage.

• Spotify Connect Integration: High-fidelity streaming is fully supported on third-party hardware, including smart speakers and high-end amplifiers that use the Spotify Connect protocol.

• Bulk Redownload (Beta): A new tool is being tested to allow users to upgrade their entire offline library to Lossless quality in a single tap, rather than deleting and redownloading individual albums.

• Exclusive Mode: Desktop users on Windows and Mac can now enable an “Exclusive Mode” that bypasses the operating system’s audio mixer for a direct, unaltered signal to an external DAC.

A Global Expansion

The rollout began in over 50 major markets, including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, and Australia. Spotify expects the feature to be available to 100% of its Premium user base by the end of the month. To enable the feature, users can navigate to Settings > Media Quality and select “Lossless” under the streaming and download headers.

Closing the Gap

For years, Spotify faced criticism for being the only major streaming service without a high-resolution option. By including it in the standard $11.99/month Premium plan, the company has bypassed the rumored “Supremium” tier for now, choosing instead to reward its loyal subscriber base and stymie the migration to other platforms.

As the green “Lossless” badge begins to appear on albums across the platform, it marks the end of one of the longest-running “vaporware” sagas in the tech industry—and the beginning of a new, clearer chapter for the world’s most popular music service.
