The historic Czech spa town prepares for a star-studded jubilee celebrating eight decades of cinematic excellence, featuring newly restored classics and cutting-edge industry initiatives.
The global cinematic spotlight shifts to the Czech Republic this month as the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival prepares to launch its milestone 60th edition.
Running from July 3 to July 11, 2026, the anniversary event also marks exactly 80 years since the festival’s inception in 1946.
Far from merely looking back, the landmark gathering is pulling out all the stops, morphing into a major mid-summer magnet for Hollywood royalty, European auteurs, and independent trailblazers alike.
Organizers have unveiled an elite roster of world-class talent set to walk the red carpet outside the brutalist icon, Hotel Thermal, establishing a powerhouse lineup of honorees and high-profile industry events that will dominate the international film discourse over the next fortnight.
The Crystal Globe Luminaries
Leading the pack of heavyweights are two icons of world cinema who will receive the festival’s highest honor, the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema:
Dustin Hoffman: The two-time Academy Award winner will touch down in the classic spa town to accept his career tribute during the high-octane opening ceremony.
In a treat for cinephiles, Hoffman will personally introduce a special anniversary screening of Mike Nichols’ 1967 masterpiece The Graduate, the film that catapulted him to superstardom and redefined the landscape of New Hollywood.
Juliette Binoche: The luminous French icon is slated to receive her Crystal Globe at the closing ceremony.
Binoche’s presence will be accompanied by a rich three-film retrospective showcasing her creative dexterity: Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy, Krzysztof Kieślowski’s eternal masterpiece Three Colors: Blue, and the experimental documentary essay In Us, which she directed.
The President’s Award & Indie Mavericks
Karlovy Vary’s competitive spirit and dedication to indie boundary-pushing are reflected in this year’s President’s Award recipients, recognizing vital forces in contemporary storytelling:
Jeffrey Wright: The character actor and recent Oscar nominee will accept the President’s Award.
His return to the festival carries a heavy dose of nostalgia; Wright will present a special screening of Julian Schnabel’s 1996 biopic Basquiat—the exact film he brought to Karlovy Vary nearly thirty years ago for its 32nd edition.
Harvey Keitel: Marking his third lifetime visit to the festival, the legendary actor will return to breathe life into Hollywood heritage, introducing a special 4K presentation of Martin Scorsese’s 1973 breakthrough crime drama Mean Streets.
Maggie Gyllenhaal: The acclaimed actress-turned-auteur will be on hand to receive the President’s Award while introducing her highly anticipated, atmospheric sophomore directorial effort, The Bride!.
Jesse Eisenberg: A favorite of the international indie circuit, Eisenberg will accept the President’s Award honoring his dual tracks as an actor and director, and will present his latest directorial feature, Double.
Family Ties and Genre Cinema
In one of the festival’s most unique programming pivots, the red carpet will transform into a family affair.
Hollywood couple Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick will arrive alongside their children, Travis and Sosie Bacon, to host the premiere of the dark horror-comedy Family Movie, an indie project in which the entire family collaboratively star and produce.
Behind the Lens & Next-Gen Industry
The festival continues its proud tradition of honoring the architects of visual grammar. Three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (the legendary eye behind Platoon, The Aviator, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) will pick up a Crystal Globe alongside director Jana Hojdová to present Robert Richardson: The White Devil, a definitive documentary on his monumental career.
Meanwhile, on the business side, the KVIFF Industry Days are launching major regional initiatives. Most notably, the newly minted “Book-to-Screen at KVIFF” forum on July 7 aims to directly bridge Central and Eastern European publishing houses with international producers to scout the next wave of prestige literary adaptations.
