Radu Jude’s ‘Chambermaid’ Set as FIDMarseille Closer

Radu Jude’s ‘Chambermaid’ Set as FIDMarseille Closer

In a major programming coup that underscores its dedication to bold, avant-garde cinema, the Marseille International Film Festival (FIDMarseille) has officially unveiled the complete lineup and editorial anchors for its upcoming 37th edition, set to run from July 7 to July 12, 2026. This year’s iteration boasts a robust, meticulously curated program of 133 films, down-selecting 75 titles representing 35 countries to compete across its highly competitive tracks—whittled down from over 3,000 global submissions.

Securing one of the summer circuit’s most anticipated slots, the festival announced that the closing night gala will feature the world premiere of “Le journal d’une femme de chambre” (Diary of a Chambermaid), the latest feature from radical Romanian auteur Radu Jude. The 94-minute film, a 2026 French-Romanian co-production starring Vincent Macaigne and Mélanie Thierry, sees the Berlin Golden Bear winner bring his trademark caustic wit and formal iconoclasm to Octave Mirbeau’s classic novel, transposing it into a sharp contemporary critique.

World Premieres and Main Slate Competitions

Beyond the high-profile closing announcement, FIDMarseille’s core five competition tracks (International Competition, French Competition, First Film Competition, Flash Competition, and the GNCR Independent Cinema Prize) feature a wave of formidable cinematic discoveries:

“El anorak rojo”: Directed by Adolpho Arrietta, this highly anticipated Spanish-French co-production is poised for a dual run in both the International and First Film competitions as a marquee world premiere.

“Entre deux songes”: Helmed by Jonas Bak, the feature operates as a triple-threat co-production between France, Germany, and the Philippines, landing a coveted spot in the French Competition and competing for the GNCR prize.

“Alea Jacarandas”: Directed by acclaimed documentarian Hassen Ferhani, the French-Algerian co-production will make its French premiere under the festival’s prestige “Other Gems” sidebar.

“El espejismo”: A sprawling, multi-territory co-production between Portugal, the United States, and Germany by director Bingham Bryant, slated for a high-profile Special Screening.

Retrospectives and Critical Spotlights

FIDMarseille’s parallel programming continues to foster intense critical discourse, anchored by two definitive showcases:

The Rabah Ameur-Zaïmeche Retrospective: The festival will honor the visceral, uncompromising oeuvre of the French-Algerian director. The tribute kicks off at the Théâtre Silvain with the open-air premiere of his latest provocative piece, Route Algérienne (2026), alongside retrospective screenings of milestone works including Adhen, Histoire De Judas, and Le Gang des bois du Temple.

The Artist Focus: This year’s experimental spotlight shines on the joint moving-image practice of Portuguese duo Mariana Caló and Francisco Queimadela, featuring screenings of experimental works like A dança do cipreste, paired with a dedicated gallery exhibition at Marseille’s Galerie Sissi Club.

Industry Footprint: FIDLab 2026

On the industry side, FIDMarseille’s co-production incubator, FIDLab, has finalized logistics for its 18th edition, taking place July 9–10, 2026. The lab has selected 12 international projects currently in pitch, development, or post-production stages, aiming to catalyze international financing and distribution by matching creators with global producers, sales agents, and festival programmers.
