Pop singer Britney Spears has announced her engagement to Sam Asgari, with whom she has long been friends.
The singer posted a video of the two of them together, showing off their engagement ring on Instagram.
Spears is in a legal battle to end her 13-year guardianship, which controls her personal and financial life.
Spears revealed that the terms of the agreement prevented her from marrying Mr. Asgari, or having more children.
Guardianship arrangements were imposed in 2008, when concerns were raised about the singer’s mental health.
Asgari, 27, a private athletic trainer and actor, posted a separate photo showing the ring and the couple kissing.
The two met on the set of a music video shoot for Spears in 2016.
Asgari’s manager, Brandon Cohen, confirmed the engagement news to People magazine.
“The couple have made their long-term relationship official today and have been deeply moved by the support, dedication and love expressed (from the public) for them,” he said.
The 39-year-old has been married twice before, the first time in 2004, when she married her childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas, but they soon ended the marriage.
Later that year, she married dancer Kevin Federline, with whom she had two children, and the couple divorced in 2007.
Last week, the singer’s father, Jamie Spears, filed papers in a Los Angeles court to end his custody of his daughter. Britney has sought to remove him from the role twice in the past two years.
Britney Spears previously referred to her father’s treatment of her as “cruel”. In July, she told a judge that she wanted to charge her father with violating guardianship rules.
The court-ordered guardianship gave Jamie Spears control of his daughter’s property, and other aspects of her life. Spears’ father stepped down from his role as guardian of his daughter’s personal affairs in 2019 due to health issues, but has continued to oversee her work arrangements.
