On Sunday, Lithuanians voted in the second round of presidential elections, the final chapter of a fierce competition

between right-wing candidates who are fighting social inequalities while avoiding any tendency to populism.

Simonetti made a slight advance in the first round on May 12 against her rival, economist Gitanas Nauseda, the latest in politics.

With right-wing pro-EU candidates, Lithuanians have resisted the skeptics’ surge in Europe,

while most voters see the EU as bringing prosperity and security.

The outgoing president, Dalia Grivatskayti, who is described as “steel lady” and is known for her aggressive approach to Russia
