Student Dies in Electric Scooter Incident at University of Utah

The University of Utah community is mourning the loss of a first-year undergraduate student from California who passed away following an electric scooter accident during the opening week of the fall semester.

The incident occurred on campus during the Friday evening of the term’s start. School officials confirmed the student’s death in a statement, expressing profound condolences to the family, friends, and classmates affected by the sudden tragedy. Out of respect for family privacy, officials have not publicly released the student’s identity or specific details surrounding how the crash took place.

“University officials are providing support and assistance to the student’s family during this difficult time,” the university stated, encouraging students and staff to utilize mental health resources, including the University Counseling Center and campus grief support services.

The death underscores ongoing safety considerations surrounding micro-mobility devices across college campuses, where e-scooters have rapidly grown in popularity for daily commuting. Local authorities and university safety personnel continue to review campus transportation guidelines in light of the event.
