The Malta Film Commission has officially unveiled a powerhouse lineup for the jury of the fourth annual Mediterrane Film Festival, set to take place from June 21 to June 28, 2026. Spearheading the evaluation of this year’s international competition are two titans of visual storytelling: visionary director Catherine Hardwicke and Academy Award-winning production designer Rick Carter.
The announcement underscores the festival’s rapid ascent as a premiere destination for global cinema. Hardwicke, celebrated for her raw, atmospheric direction in films like Thirteen and the cultural phenomenon Twilight, brings a keen eye for character-driven narratives. Joining her is Rick Carter, the legendary aesthetic architect behind the worlds of Avatar, Jurassic Park, and Lincoln.
A Jury of Creative Visionaries
The inclusion of such heavyweights highlights the festival’s 2026 theme, “Beyond Together,” which aims to foster collaboration across borders and artistic disciplines. Both Hardwicke and Carter are no strangers to the Mediterranean hub, having previously engaged with the local filmmaking community through high-profile masterclasses in Valletta.
This year, they will lead a distinguished panel tasked with awarding the coveted Golden Bee Awards. The competition categories have been expanded for the 2026 edition to include:
• Best Feature Film
• Best Performance
• Best Screenwriting
• Best Original Score
• The Special Jury Award (Mediterranean Competition)
Malta: The Emerging Hub of the Mediterranean
Malta Film Commissioner Johann Grech emphasized that securing such high-caliber jury members reflects the island’s growing influence in the international film landscape. “Having Catherine and Rick return to Malta in this official capacity is a testament to the creative synergy we are building here,” Grech stated. “Their discerning eyes will ensure that the Golden Bee Awards remain a mark of true excellence.”
As the festival prepares to transform iconic locations like the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fort Ricasoli into open-air cinemas, the buzz in Valletta is palpable. With the jury now set, the industry’s focus shifts to the official selection, where filmmakers from across the Mediterranean and beyond will compete under the watchful gaze of two of Hollywood’s most respected innovators.
The winners of the 2026 Mediterrane Film Festival will be announced during a prestigious closing gala on June 28th.
