Egyptian Education Minister and Acting Culture Minister Abdel Aziz Qunsuwah officially kicked off the 33rd Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre (CIFET) on Tuesday evening, launching a weeklong celebration of avant-garde performing arts. Led by festival president Samh Mehran, the opening night drew an array of diplomats, cultural attaches, and prominent international and Egyptian theater figures to the red carpet in the Egyptian capital.
A Heritage Honored and a Philosophical Rise
Following the national anthem, the ceremony—hosted by actress Nourhan Shoaib—opened with the premiere of The Founder, a documentary directed by Mohamed Fadel El-Kabbani, written by Mohamed Abdel Rahman Zaghloul, and edited by Nagham Allam. The film revisits the festival’s origins through the testimony of former Culture Minister and founder Farouk Hosny, detailing its evolution into a staple on the global festival circuit.
The screening was followed by Hayah (Life), an opening theatrical piece directed and choreographed by Karima Bedair, exploring existential questions through movement and silence alongside drama by Mohamed Fouad, scenography by Anis Ismail, and lighting by Yasser Shaalan.
Redefining the Experimental Space
Addressing the crowd, Mehran framed experimental theater as a dynamic force meant to disrupt creative inertia rather than offer comfortable answers. He underscored the medium’s role in challenging historic narratives through a critical lens before offering accolades to the festival’s international partners—including the British Council, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the Swiss Cultural Center—alongside key broadcasting partners such as France 24 and Monte Carlo Doualiya.
Global Exchange on Stage
Taking the podium to declare the 33rd edition open, Qunsuwah highlighted the festival’s nearly four-decade legacy in showcasing Egyptian artistry while welcoming world perspectives. With more than 400 global submissions this year, the 2026 lineup pairs performances with intensive workshops and panel discussions focusing on the future of performance amid rapid technological shifts.
Honoring Industry Pioneers
The opening night celebrated 13 industry veterans across performance, directing, playwriting, and scenography. Egyptian honorees included Hamza El-Eily, Tarek El-Dewairi, Mohamed El-Gharabawi, Hamdy Hussein, Dr. Essam Abdel Aziz, and Aida Fahmy. International tribute recipients featured Lemieux Bonifacio (New Zealand), Patricia Lombardi Akira (United States), Scott Graham (England), Jawad Al-Shakarji (Iraq), Sulayman Al-Bassam (Kuwait), Lina Abyad (Lebanon), and Dr. Youssef Aidabi (Sudan).
Jury Announcement and Festival Roadmap
Organizers unveiled the official competition jury, chaired by Egyptian actor Riad El-Khouly. The panel features scenographer Mohamed El-Gharabawi (Egypt), director Mohamed Mounir El-Arqui (Tunisia), playwright Khalid Al-Ruwai (Bahrain), academic Patricia Lombardi Akira (United States), theater maker Hassan Kassi Kouyatà (France/Burkina Faso), and researcher Sasho Ognenovski (North Macedonia). The festival runs in Cairo through September 8, 2026.
