Scorsese and DiCaprio’s ‘What Happens at Night’ Wraps Production

Apple has wrapped principal photography on the psychological thriller What Happens at Night, marking the seventh feature film collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and star Leonardo DiCaprio, the latest installment in one of contemporary cinema’s most acclaimed creative partnerships.

Shooting recently concluded in Prague under strict secrecy, with Apple yet to announce an official release date for the project.

Adapted by Patrick Marber from Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name, the story follows an American couple who travel to a remote, snowbound European town with the intention of adopting a child. Upon their arrival, the journey turns enigmatic as they check into a cavernous, surreal hotel and encounter a troupe of peculiar characters, setting off an escalating narrative of psychological tension and fractured reality.

DiCaprio stars as the husband alongside Jennifer Lawrence as his wife, representing their first screen pairing. Set against an eerie atmosphere, the role pushes DiCaprio’s character into heightened psychological strain and existential dread as the line between perception and illusion blurs.

The ensemble cast also features Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris. The production leans heavily into slow-burn suspense and character-driven psychological horror rather than traditional tropes.

The duo’s partnership began with 2002’s Gangs of New York, expanding across six subsequent features including The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Over two decades, Scorsese’s direction has provided DiCaprio a canvas for complex character work, cementing their recurring reunions as major cinematic events.
