CAIRO — Legendary Egyptian actress Nadia El-Gendy, affectionately dubbed “Star of the Masses” across the Arab world, is set to receive a career achievement award at the sixth edition of the Cairo Francophone Film Festival (CFFF), taking place from Oct. 3 to Oct. 7, 2026.
Organizers announced the honor alongside the official dates for this year’s festival, which continues its mission of fostering cultural dialogue between Egypt and the broader Francophone world through cinema.
“I am truly honored and proud to be recognized by the Cairo Francophone Film Festival, a unique platform that celebrates cinema and creates a genuine space for cross-cultural communication,” El-Gendy said in a statement. “Every award holds a special place in my heart, reminding me of a long journey shared with art and the public. Yet, the enduring love and respect of the audience remain the greatest honor of my career.”
Festival president and film critic Yasser Moheb praised El-Gendy’s unprecedented impact on Egyptian cinema, emphasizing her pivotal role in establishing female-led blockbusters.
“Honoring Nadia El-Gendy is a celebration of an extraordinary trajectory that established a powerful female presence in Egyptian film history,” Moheb noted. “She was not merely a box-office star; her name defined an entire era. She was among the first to tackle complex themes, including terrorism, substance abuse, and espionage, blending serious subject matter with high-octane cinematic entertainment.”
Spanning over five decades with a filmography exceeding 60 features, El-Gendy made her early screen debut in Jamila, the Algerian before cementing her status as a leading box-office draw with the 1974 period musical drama Bamba Kashar. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she dominated Egyptian theaters with top-grossing thrillers and political dramas, including El-Batinya, Wekalet El-Balah, Mission in Tel Aviv, and 48 Hours in Israel.
El-Gendy’s prior accolades include career tributes at the Cairo International Film Festival in 2006, as well as honors at the Damascus International Film Festival and the Rabat International Author Film Festival in 2008.
The upcoming sixth edition of CFFF will feature a curated lineup of film screenings, panel discussions, and industry gatherings aimed at connecting contemporary global cinema with Egypt’s rich cinematic legacy.
