Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino will present the career honor to the Spanish star prior to a special screening of Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Cannes entry ‘The Beloved.’
The Rome Film Festival is set to honor Spanish actor Javier Bardem with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award during its upcoming edition, running Oct. 13-25. The tribute celebrates the Oscar winner’s decades-long trajectory as one of global cinema’s most versatile and formidable talents.
Oscar-winning Italian director Paolo Sorrentino will present the honor to Bardem ahead of a special screening of his latest feature, The Beloved, directed by Spain’s Rodrigo Sorogoyen.
Featured in the festival’s “Best Films of 2026” sidebar, the psychological drama made its world premiere in official competition at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year.
Bardem delivers a complex performance as a legendary filmmaker burdened by a legacy of violence and excess, who attempts to reconcile with his estranged daughter by inviting her to star in his upcoming project.
Bardem made history as the first Spanish actor to win an Academy Award for his terrifying turn as hitman Anton Chigurh in the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men.
His distinguished career also includes three additional Oscar nominations for Before Night Falls, Biutiful, and Being the Ricardos.
Over the years, the actor has seamlessly navigated between prestige auteur fare and global blockbusters, with standout credits including Alejandro Amenábar’s The Sea Inside, Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the James Bond entry Skyfall, and Denis Villeneuve’s epic Dune franchise.
The Rome tribute comes amidst an exceptionally busy festival run for Bardem. He recently starred alongside Penélope Cruz in Florian Zeller’s psychological thriller Bunker, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
Looking ahead, Bardem is set to reprise his role as Stilgar in the third installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series this December, and he recently wrapped production on Amazon MGM Studios’ Hello & Paris opposite Kate Hudson.
