Emily Watson Honored with Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival

A Historic Full-Circle Moment In a distinguished cinematic celebration held at the National Theatre in Sarajevo, acclaimed British actress Emily Watson was awarded the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival, taking place from August 14 to 21.
The prestigious honor recognizes her extraordinary career and enduring contributions to film, television, and theater over three decades.

The accolade carries deep historical significance for both the festival and the actress. In 1996, during the festival’s second edition—established amidst the Bosnian War as an act of cultural defiance—Lars von Trier’s Breaking the Waves was screened.

The landmark drama marked Watson’s feature film debut and earned the very first Heart of Sarajevo for Best Film in the festival’s history.
Thirty years later, Watson returns to receive the honorary award, bringing her journey with Sarajevo full circle.

A Personal Reunion in the Balkans Festival

founder and president Mirsad Purivatra presented the award to Watson, recalling the powerful impact of her performance in Breaking the Waves on the city’s audiences.

Purivatra also highlighted her earlier visit in 2005, when she served as a trustee for the Katrin Cartlidge Foundation while pregnant with her daughter, Julie. The ceremony featured a heartfelt video message from Swedish actor Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd, Watson’s co-star in Breaking the Waves and himself an Honorary Heart of Sarajevo recipient last year.

Accepting the award, Watson dedicated the honor to the memory of the late actress Katrin Cartlidge and expressed her gratitude to the festival and its community.

Leading the Jury and Honoring Global Talent

In addition to receiving the festival’s highest honor, Watson is serving as President of the Competition Program — Feature Film Jury. She is joined by Croatian director Igor Bezinović, Greek filmmaker Athina Rachel Tsangari, Macedonian actress Sara Klimoska, and European Film Academy Director Matthieu Darras. As part of her festival appearance, Watson also conducted a masterclass sharing her insights on character development and performance with emerging filmmakers.

Watson is part of an illustrious group of honorees at this year’s festival, which also presented the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo to Iranian auteur Asghar Farhadi, Mexican actor-director Diego Luna, American actor Woody Harrelson, and veteran Bosnian actor Emir Hadžihafizbegović.
Handcrafted from sterling silver by local artisans in Sarajevo, the award’s design originates from a sketch made during the war by French designer Agnès B.

A Lasting Legacy in International Cinema

The recognition highlights Watson’s standing as one of the most compelling performers in contemporary cinema.

A two-time Academy Award nominee, Watson’s acclaimed body of work spans from Hilary and Jackie and Gosford Park to Chernobyl, Small Things Like These—for which she won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival—and the upcoming series Dune: Prophecy.
