Director Kim Jong-kwan is returning to familiar grounds with an elevated, reflective touch. The Busan International Film Festival has selected his latest feature, The Table: Day and Night, as the opening night film for its upcoming 31st edition. The human drama will make its world premiere at the Busan Cinema Center on October 6, kicking off the festival’s ten-day run through October 15, alongside the Asian Contents & Film Market taking place October 10–13.

Serving as a spiritual successor to Kim’s acclaimed 2016 festival favorite The Table, the new picture shifts its focus to four interconnected romantic vignettes set within a quiet Seoul café across the changing tones of summer and autumn. Driven by delicate conversational beats and precise emotional shifts, the narrative weaves together an ensemble cast navigating attraction, hesitation, and rediscovery.
Interwoven Romance and Intimate Narratives
Kim Min-ha (Pachinko) stars alongside Jo Jung-hyuk as two individuals caught in a fleeting interaction that quietly turns romantic. Han Sun-hwa reunites with an old friend, played by Chang Ryul, to confront the evolving boundaries of their relationship. Meanwhile, Shim Eun-kyung portrays a web novel writer locked in a subtle creative dynamic with an independent film director, played by Lee Hee-jun, while Kim Dong-hwi plays the partner of an aspiring singer.

Tracing his signature short-form structure back to his award-winning 2004 short How to Operate a Polaroid Camera and his work on Netflix’s anthology Persona, the festival noted that the film avoids grand dramatic contrivances, deriving its weight instead from capturing inner voices and quiet personal revelations.
