Avengers: Endgame returned to the top of the North American box office following a theatrical re-release titled Avengers: Endgame – Encore, grossing an estimated $26 million over the weekend amid fierce competition from Resident Evil and a wave of new entries.
Disney re-expanded the Anthony and Joe Russo-directed tentpole into 3,060 domestic theaters, where it picked up $11.2 million on Friday, including Thursday evening previews. The special re-release features exclusive preview footage from Marvel’s highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18.
The re-release builds on one of the grandest achievements in box office history. During its original 2019 run, Endgame shattered records with a staggering $1.2 billion global debut before ending its theatrical run at roughly $2.7 billion worldwide, cementing its place as one of the highest-grossing films of all time.
Holding onto second place, Sony’s Resident Evil continued its strong performance in its second frame, bringing in $6.9 million on Friday toward a projected $23.5 million weekend. Directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams, the reboot is expected to drop around 60 percent from its opening, bringing its domestic cume to approximately $103.6 million.
A24’s Primetime also made noise in the box office race, tracking toward a $20.5 million weekend from 2,800 theaters. The Robert Pattinson starrer earned $8.4 million on Friday, inclusive of Thursday previews.
Meanwhile, Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast is closing in on the $20 million mark for the three-day frame after fetching $7.4 million on Friday across 3,400 locations. Directed by David Ayer, the action-thriller stars Pitt as a former Special Forces operative stranded in the wilderness alongside his combat dog.
Rounding out the top five is DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures’ animated feature Forgotten Island, which is eyeing an $11.5 million weekend after generating $4.3 million on Friday (including early previews).
In other studio news, Universal Pictures achieved a major milestone this week as its 2026 global box office handle surpassed the $5 billion threshold, propelled by heavy hitters including The Odyssey, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael.
Looking ahead, the domestic box office is bracing for a fresh clash next weekend with the debut of Tom Cruise’s Digger, alongside Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, setting up another high-stakes battle for the crown.
