Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is headed to the Cannes Film Festival.
MI:8 will screen out of competition on May 14, with Cruise, director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie and the rest of the film’s cast walking up the steps of the Palais des Festivals for a launch in the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
Cruise reprises his role as Ethan Hunt in the eighth film, which like many in the series is from writer-director McQuarrie. Cannes confirmed the launch of the latest Mission Impossible franchise pic on Tuesday, with the screening to come ahead of a May 23 global release by Paramount.
The cast for MI: 8 includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Mariela Garriga and Angela Bassett.
The feature is the latest installment for Cruise for a franchise that dates back to 1996’s Mission: Impossible and has become known for aerial stunts and thrills. Cruise was in Cannes in 1992 for the premiere of Ron Howard’s Far and Away, and he returned in 2022 for the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, while Cruise also earned an honorary Palme d’or.
Paramount has been teasing the eighth Mission Impossible film as the “final” entry in the franchise, not least to boost audience interest. Paramount has also long telegraphed that it aimed to bring the film to Cannes.
Cruise and McQuarrie produce the Paramount and Skydance-based MI:8 film. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger and Chris Brock executive produce.
