John Malkovich is keeping his feet firmly on the ground when it comes to early Awards Season chatter surrounding his performance in The Ninth Wild Horse.
Speaking to reporters following the film’s world premiere at the 83rd Venice Film Festival, the veteran actor made it clear that his focus remains squarely on the project itself rather than the upcoming statuette race.
“That’s very kind of you,” Malkovich remarked when asked during the festival’s press conference whether he had begun drafting an Academy Award acceptance speech. The actor emphasized that his primary concern is simply ensuring the film receives the recognition he feels it deserves.
Reflecting on his expansive career, the 72-year-old actor noted that working alongside a vast array of writers, directors, and fellow performers has shaped his perspective on the industry, adding that he has never viewed his peers as direct competition.
For Malkovich, the true value of any project lies within the quality of the narrative and the collective effort behind the lens.
Directed by Martin McDonagh, the feature—competing for the coveted Golden Lion—boasts an ensemble cast that includes Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, and Parker Posey. The project marks McDonagh’s return to the Lido following his previous festival runs with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) and The Banshees of Inisherin (2022).
Given the director’s track record—including two Oscar wins for Three Billboards stars Rockwell and Frances McDormand—The Ninth Wild Horse has naturally surfaced as an early contender for the forthcoming awards circuit.
Awards chatter aside, the two-time Oscar nominee also addressed the topic of retirement, confirming he has no intentions of stepping away from the craft anytime soon.
“I’ve done what I love my whole life, and I intend to keep doing it,” Malkovich said, offering a dry humor spin on his future in Hollywood: “They’ll force me to retire when the time comes.”
