Fatih Akin’s latest feature, Ghost Song, is set to make its world premiere as the opening night film of the 74th San Sebastian International Film Festival on September 18 at the Kursaal Auditorium.
The romantic supernatural drama also marks the German-Turkish auteur’s first foray into the festival’s prestigious Golden Shell competition, leading a lineup of 17 official selection titles through September 26.
Starring Meriam Daoud and Eren M. Güvercin as Farha and Fares, the film follows two young lovers whose romance sparks at a graduation party, only to take a tragic turn when Farha unexpectedly dies that same night.
The narrative shifts into fantasy as Farha finds a way back to Fares through his dreams, blurring the boundaries between memory, grief, and reality in an exploration of love enduring beyond loss.
Akin—whose acclaimed filmography includes Head-On, The Edge of Heaven, Soul Kitchen, and In the Fade—joins a formidable competitive slate at Donostia.
Other high-profile titles in the Golden Shell running include Pablo Larraín’s Sad Mete, Maha Harada’s In My Father’s Room, Mike Leigh’s Tender Care, and Jesse Eisenberg’s First Appearance.
